Massage Therapy for Athletes
To most people "Sports Massage" means aggressive or deep pressure to specific muscles which leads to soreness for a few days. That is not correct. Sports Massage is meant to assist in the preparation for or recovery from an athlete's workout or competition. This is how I define "sports massage." Corrective or Medical massage is used to help with an injury or dysfunction.
All sessions at Rx Massage Therapy include assessments of any painful or weak movements, joint dysfunction(s), and muscle imbalances. Assessment for muscle strains, nerve compressions, or painful movements dictates which of the many approaches to use and in which order. Issues resulting from current or previous injuries falls under the category of Medical Massage even if the injury was sustained during athletic activity. Oftentimes, corrective exercises and movement specific stretches are discussed for self care, as recommended by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). This multi-faceted approach is why athletes at every level of competition, from high school to the most elite in the world trust Ben at Rx Massage Therapy with helping optimize their physical potential.

Ben is the coordinator for the Rx Massage Therapy Sports Team which caters to the needs of both large and small events. Event directors who want the highest quality of sports massage and a professional massage presence have been contracting Rx Massage Therapy since 2003. We are seen at sports events such as marathons, triathlons, and tournaments (eg. golf, volleyball, tennis, CrossFit, and baseball). We also provide chair massage for corporate events, conventions and fundraisers.
Do you want to offer the highest quality, professional massage therapy team at your event? We will tailor a professional set up with the right number of experienced, licensed and insured massage therapists based on the number of attendees. There are several reasons why we get asked back year after year to work the same events.

Continue recovery after you leave the massage venue
The best things you can do for recovery of the legs will increase circulation (fresh blood in, waste and nutrient deficient blood out). To bring blood in, you need movement. You know, the last thing you want to do. To move blood and lymph/waste out, you need movement and graduated pressure. Compression pants, Normatec (or other segmental compression garments) are great, however, they limit healthy blood coming into the area and there is no movement.
Next option is 100% free! Put your legs up on a wall and let gravity do the work of "draining" the legs. Again, no movement or increased blood to the legs to accelerate healing.
The BEST self-care recovery option, and this is coming from a 16 year IMFL Massage Team Captain, is to walk in neck deep water. The larger the steps you can take with a full range of motion of all your joints, the better. You will accelerate your lymphatic system up to 10x's as fast for nearly 24 hours. You're moving and increasing blood flow in and out of your legs, and the pressure of the water down at your feet is much greater than at the surface, so you will be encouraging lymph and blood return. Do it daily. Warm water is better than cool water. Unfortunately, hot tubs are not deep enough.
