Massage Therapy for Athletes
To most people "Sports Massage" means aggressive or deep pressure to specific muscles which leads to soreness. That is not correct. Sports Massage aids in the preparation for or recovery from an athlete's workout or competition. That is how I define "sports massage." Pre-event massage is part of an athlete's warm-up. Massage can be done up to a day in advance which can positively affect an athlete's performance. Post-event massage is designed to get the used, nutrient-deficient blood out of swollen and fatigued muscles. This is known as "a flush." Whereas, corrective or Medical Massage is pain/injury intervention.

Continue recovery after you leave the massage venue
The best things you can do for recovery of the legs will increase circulation (fresh blood in, waste and nutrient deficient blood out). To bring blood in, you need movement. You know, the last thing you want to do. To move blood and lymph/waste out, you need movement and graduated pressure. Compression pants, Normatec (or other segmental compression garments) are great, however, they limit healthy blood coming into the area and there is no movement.
Next option is 100% free! Put your legs up on a wall and let gravity do the work of "draining" the legs. Again, no movement or increased blood to the legs to accelerate healing.
The BEST self-care recovery option, and this is coming from a 16 year IMFL Massage Team Captain, is to walk in neck deep water. The larger the steps you can take with a full range of motion of all your joints, the better. You will accelerate your lymphatic system up to 10x's as fast for nearly 24 hours. You're moving and increasing blood flow in and out of your legs, and the pressure of the water down at your feet is much greater than at the surface, so you will be encouraging lymph and blood return. Do it daily. Warm water is better than cool water. Unfortunately, hot tubs are not deep enough.
